The Hunchback of Notre Dame (2.5 stars)
There have been, to date, four big screen adaptations of the classic Victor Hugo novel. While Disney’s is still my favorite, not as an adaptation, but as an animated feature, you have to look back on this second adaptation starring Charles Laughton as Quasimodo as an interesting take on the story.

I wrote a long article on this film for an unpublished book of analyses for the Online Film Critics Society some years ago. I don’t remember where I put it, but I examined all four and recall that this was better than the 1956 version, but inferior to the silent 1923 adaptation.

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (4 stars)
Can Mr. Smith still get to Washington? That’s utterly debatable, but this film touched on a compelling element of politics back in the 1930s. It was a look at how even if Mr. Smith can get to Washington, the corruption and lies can take their toll. This film epitomizes what many of us see democracy being all about and its stirring filibuster is an iconic part of film history thanks to its genuine and heartfelt belief that we can be a better nation if we remember (and our politicians remember) what serving the people is really all about.

Only Angels Have Wings (3 stars)

The Wizard of Oz (4 stars)
Who doesn’t have fond memories of one of the greatest children’s films of all time. Although color film had been a regular part of cinema for a number of years, The Wizard of Oz symbolic transported the audience from the wholesome, stark black-and-white filmmaking that had dominated the prior four decades into the lush, magic of color photography. The story of innocence seeking to destroy that which would tarnish her spirit is one of the quintessential moviegoing experiences.
