With a small opening weekend, The New Mutants proved that in the heartland, where theaters are open, there is some modest amount of money to be made. It doesn’t, however, remove the doubt that the costs provide the vast majority of a film’s box office success. This weekend may either prove the low-number trend or suggest that there could be a revitalization going on.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Christopher Nolan makes event films and this is certainly one of them. That said, early word isn’t great, which has tempered my interest quite a bit.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The year’s most highly publicized film so far could be a major awards contender or a total bust, it’s a strange year.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A Christopher Nolan film is usually worth looking forward to, and as theaters finally reopen it should be a good one to see. I don’t know that it will be amazing and time traveling films have some logic problems, but it should be entertaining.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A dull trailer and an uninteresting premise.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Off-kilter romantic drama with interesting locale could become a future cable TV staple.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I really could not tell what this film is about or why I should care about the protagonist.
