Looking at the Weekend: Sep. 28-30, 2018

First place will be something of a fight this week as two films have a lot of potential for box office dominance. Night School features Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish in a comedy that plays to their strengths. Smallfoot is the first animated feature in some time, which means families will likely flock to it. I suspect that, in the end, Smallfoot will come out on top.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): A good horror film is hard to find, especially when almost everything out there is supernatural or found-footage. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another scary Halloween with another generation of teenagers. I’ll pass. Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a better than average horror movie, though perhaps headed down towards too much gore by the end, but not really my kind of film.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): A modern take on the classic novel just doesn’t seem like the greatest idea. Peter J. Patrick (PP): There may be a smart way to bring Little Women into the 21st Century but this doesn’t appear to be it. Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not sure if an update of Little Women is what we need. It does not look bad, but feels unneeded. It might prove charming, but I am dubious that it will be that good.

Thomas LaTourette (TL): I don’t see this being a contender for Best Animated Feature as it looks too silly to qualify. Might be good for small children, but everyone else should take care.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer has some funny moments, but not enough. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early word on this stand-up comic comedy is good but I’m not fully convinced. Thomas LaTourette (TL): It might be fun, as the trailer juggles humor and seriousness somewhat well, but it looks like it might be more of a downer than a laugh riot.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s hard to say exactly what this looks like? Perhaps a cross between West Side Story and ? Possibly not even that. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Can’t tell from the trailer if this is good, bad or indifferent. Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like it is trying for the edgier nostalgia of a more modern American Graffiti, but I just do not think it is going to succeed.

Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be any Asian heist movie out there, even though it tries to add a twist. Go if that is your favorite style, but everyone else can pass.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): It will be interesting to see how this film plays in today’s current political climate. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sundance prize-winner about the aftermath of a police shooting looks compelling. Thomas LaTourette (TL): If they don’t make the story too simplistic, it could be an interesting film about how a police shooting affects various people.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): The cast is strong, but the premise is weak. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Robert Redford’s presumed last hurrah looks like one of his best in some time. Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be a charming swan song for Robert Redford as he has supposedly retired from making movies, though the trailer does not grab me. I hope that it is good enough and that they give Sissy Spacek a decent part.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like a terrible knock off of a Martin McDonagh film. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Tired looking chase film with tired looking actors doesn’t look very appealing. Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer tries to blur the lines about this not just being a revenge movie, but it feels more muddled instead of clarified with the different story lines they have going through it.

	Wesley Lovell (WL): These films are coming too frequently to be of much interest. Peter J. Patrick (PP): Festival hit could be a real sleeper. Thomas LaTourette (TL): Another coming of age tale, and this looks perhaps a bit worse than average. Coming from the female perspective is a slightly new angle, but it still does not look that good.
