With a single new wide release over the last holiday weekend before the fall, Light Between Oceans should easily be able to take over the top spot when last weekend’s number one, Don’t Breathe, suffers the traditional post-opening horror plummet. Even holdovers won’t be able to stop Light, which might just prove to be a rare Labor Day hit. $30 million is the Labor Day weekend record and that’s not a very high hurdle to climb.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The book is well loved, but the trailer doesn’t make me excited. Still, with this cast, I’d be foolish not to have some interest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Old-fashioned narrative film should do well among older audiences.
Tripp Burton (TB): Our first big Oscar season movie, and it sounds like it might live up to its promise.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Three great actors, but a film that sounds more like a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. I don’t think it will be as good as it wants to be.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The unique concept interests me, but there isn’t quite enough info out there about it to know for 100% certain.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Stronger than usual cast for a modern horror movie, but still not my cup of tea.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m glad that Kate Mara is getting her own vehicle, but this does not look like it lives up to her talents.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a bloodier version of Ex Machina, and not nearly as subtle.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Not my style of humor.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): For fans of Danish depravity.
Tripp Burton (TB): Apparently this is a franchise I’ve never heard ofโ€ฆ
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a mostly unfunny comedy of two German men coming to America. The trailer did not make me want to see it at all.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Jerry Lewis isn’t an actor I find myself wanting to seek out at all times.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): 3-year-old film finally given a limited release after flopping at Cannes doesn’t seem too promising.
Tripp Burton (TB): It’s nice to see Jerry Lewis headlining a movie again, but this looks like it is a waste of everyone involved’s talents.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Perhaps it will be interesting, though the trailer looks like a lot of old films. It could be nice to see Jerry Lewis star in a film again, but I am not even sure of that.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I can’t fathom this will be any good, but some elements of the trailer do look engaging.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Mexican remake of a German film, can we wait for the Hollywood version?
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks dreadfully unfunny.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does nothing to excite me on this one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Early word is strong, but I have to be in a very good frame of mind to want to engage in a film like this.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another examination of the drug culture, doesn’t float my boat.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks disturbing but intriguing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Both the star and new director have gotten good notices, but another film about young people behaving badly with drugs really does not appeal.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Kevin Smith hasn’t made a movie that’s looked fascinating in years.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Will Kevin Smith ever make a good film?
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks entertaining enoug h, but I’ll wait until it is streaming.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This Kevin Smith film looks atrocious without any redeeming values, unless you like films that make fun of Canadians.
