A whole herd of new releases stamped this weekend’s box office. Currently, there are four new wide releases and one expansion headed for cineplexes. While it’s possible a couple of those might end up with more limited releases, of the ones we know for certain will stay wide (Clerks III, which is expanding; See How They Run and The Woman King), Viola Davis’ film has the strongest hand to play. That said, if Pearl goes wide, it could be a surprise hit since inventive horror sometimes does quite well.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Without having seen the original film, this spinoff isn’t high on my priority list.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Bizarre horror film is not something I’m interested in seeing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): While the trailer is humorous in its homage to 1950s and 1960s films, the horror aspect just did not appeal to me.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): After the disappointment that was Knives Out, I’m not entirely sold on this all-star whodunnit.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Comedy-mystery in the vein of Knives Out looks to be a step up from that disappointment.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There is enough humor in the trailer to make me hope this will be good, but the mixed reviews make me think it will be mediocre.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): With a premise like this and a cast to support it, this could be quite engaging.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Impressive looking production about African female warriors, but what is the point?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are very good, but the trailer does not excite that much, not a good way to pull people in to see the film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Having not seen either of the two previous films, I’m not inclined to give this one a chance and it certainly doesn’t have me wanting to catch the prior films either.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Seems amusing enough, but is there still an audience for Kevin Smith’s convenience store antics?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Having not seen the original two films, there is nothing about this one that looks at all appealing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It has a potent premsie even if the trailer is sometimes hard to follow.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Moroccan film with a convoluted plot might do better on a TV streaming service than it will in theatres.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): If the setting weren’t Morocco, it might seem trite, but a school of kids wanting to do rap does seem interesting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer was a bit dull, but Jon Hamm is a funny fellow, so this could be worth checking out.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Gregory McDonald’s Fletch novels were never properly done with Chevy Chase, hopefully Jon Hamm brings the right touch to the character.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There is a possibility that it will be funny, but the trailer does not find a lot of laughs, but perhaps enough to bring in an audience.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Thandie Newton is the sole reason to have interest in this film as the trailer isn’t that compelling.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Compelling woman-in-jeopardy drama should be a showcase for Thandiwe Newton.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Thandiwe Newton is a phenomenal actress and it sounds like she has found a film that shows her off well, but the movie just feels a bit unpleasant.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): An interesting idea with an unimpressive trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Some good actors in what looks like a David Lynch film without David Lynch could be hit or miss.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The film tries for David Lynch but the trailer does not make it there. It looks interesting, but odd and confusing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Another intriguing premise with a lackluster trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): True story of twin sisters who will only communicate with each other looks like a tough one to sit through.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): At first I did not know what to make of the trailer, but by the end it had my attention.
