With so little to really call blockbuster material, the reboot of the alien sci-fi action feature Predator makes its way to the big screen and should do well despite the prior films barely making little at the box office. There isn’t a lot of competition as the second weekend of The Nun is surely to drop the customary 50% to 65% giving plenty of wiggle room for Predator, which has little competition from the likes of A Simple Favor and White Boy Rick, but could face an unexpected challenge from Christian-targeted Unbroken: Path to Redemption, the sequel to, but utterly disconnected from, Unbroken directed by Angelina Jolie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The only film in this series I’ve seen is Predator 2 and it was atrocious. I’ve heard better things about the other films, but I’m still not interested.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Not my usual cup of tea but this remake looks better than the original.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have not seen any of the earlier films of the series, and I see no reason to start with this one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Anna Kendrick is reason to see just about any film and this one looks like it could be modestly fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Vapid mystery looks like it would be agony to sit through.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An okay cast may make something of this thriller, but Paul Feig has never been my favorite director, so I am dubious.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I had limited interest in seeing Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken. I have absolutely no interest in seeing this “sequel.”
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This sequel to Unbroken appears to be an overly earnest evangelical message film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The original Unbroken had a strong lead and a decent director, this one looks like a pale imitation of that as it picks up the real life story of Louis Zamperini after the war.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Matthew McConaughey isn’t of interest to me and this biopic with him as a secondary character doesn’t add much appeal.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Good cast looks wasted in poorly constructed true story of a teenage FBI informant.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It should be an intriguing story, but the trailer and the early reviews do not make it sound like it succeeds.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As much as I love Julianne Moore, even my adoration of her has its limits. This is probably one of them.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Undersold hostage drama might have better luck on DVD and cable.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be an okay movie, but the trailer does not make a great case for it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Emma Thompson is always an actress to watch, though this film feels a bit like tripe based on the trailer alone.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Emma Thompson may be a long-shot for an Oscar, but this looks to be her best work in decades.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Emma Thompson looks to have her best role in years as a judge involved in a life-changing decision, though an early release may lose her any chances of a nomination for it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s a commonplace horror premise that isn’t given sufficient originality to make it look interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting looking, if minor, horror film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It presents a somewhat moody feeling, but another horror film does not appeal.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This could be quite fun, following Lizzie Borden in her life after the legendary incident. Solid actors make it even more interesting, though the trailer isn’t great.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Takes the Borden legend in a new direction, but it still ends with the ax murders.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A good cast, but an uninspiring trailer and lackluster early reviews make this look like a misfire.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This pseudo-zombie pandemic film looks especially awful.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Four-year-old pandemic thriller looks like it should have stayed on the shelf.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Matt Smith has turned into a credible actor, but this looks a little cheap and derivative so probably not worth the time.
