In the wake of the towering, if weaker-than-anticipated, opening weekend of It Chapter Two, the likelihood of either of this week’s new releases topping the box office is rather slim, but both films will be competitive with one another for the second-place finish. Hustlers, by its more action-heavy and entertainment-oriented concept, has the advantage this week, though The Goldfinch, based on a beloved and well-regarded novel, could surprise. Both films want to bring in adult audiences, but the audience overlap is sure to be minimal and the end result being the powerhouse personalities of Hustlers probably give it the advantage.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): By pedigree alone, this film sounds like it will be quite the effort; however, the film has gotten notably little attention so far, which could mean it’s not as good as we hope.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early reviews are not good, but I still want to see this once highly anticipated adaptation of the 2013 novel.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have been looking forward to this film and still expect it to be a major player at the Oscars, but the early reviews are making me doubt that it is that good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): In spite of the solid word out of the festivals, the film doesn’t hold much appeal for me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a trashy waste of time.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailers did not make this look anything other than ordinary, but the early reviews are making it sound pretty good.

Wesley Lovell (WL): The idea just doesn’t work for me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This modern take on Frankenstein seems quite realistic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer for this modern day Frankenstein film fails to excite, but the early reviews are surprisingly good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailers have been terrible and that doesn’t bode well for the film itself.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Off-kilter sci-fi film could be a sleeper.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer feels like a mashup of too many types of film genres, and I am just dubious about how it will hold together.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer isn’t very good, which doesn’t make the film sound like it will be much better.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a surprisingly good prison drama.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Except for its tropical setting, this prison drama looks no better than most and definitely worse than many.

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept just doesn’t appeal to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Columbian film looks like Apocalypse Now meets Lord of the Flies.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Visually it is beautiful and some early critics are almost rapturous, but the lack of any coherent plot in the trailer makes me worry.

Wesley Lovell (WL): The film looked fairly insignificant in the trailer, which doesn’t make the movie sound that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Historical Mormon drama is at least something different.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This western tries for some modern sensibilities, but it did little to entice me to see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s an idea that will probably end up being corny, which isn’t promising, but it was interesting enough in the trailer I saw.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unusual drama with a distinct New York City look to it has me interested.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could either be an intense and novel film, or an exceedingly stupid one, and neither the critics nor I can agree on which way it will go.
