There are two films that have a difficult climb to the top of the box office this week against the second week of Joker. Either could do it if the box office winds are with them, but both could ride bad reviews to subpar tallies. The Addams Family is the latest Blue Sky animated feature to make a run at the box office. While Blue Sky isn’t a studio well known for the quality of their output, they do have a pretty decent track record of box office success. If anything, Addams has the best shot at bringing down Joker. That said, Gemini Man could overcome its negative press with a solid box office run if Will Smith can return to the good graces of audiences. Smith has long been out of favor with the public as none of his films have been hits in recent years, at least because of his starring role. Gemini Man is the kind of gimmick that could alleviate his box office woes. The weekend’s other new release, Jexi, is likely to come in fourth for the weekend regardless of how the others play.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There have been two previous incarnations of the Charles Addams cartoon and both have been stellar; however, this film looks like a pale imatation of all of them.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly anticipated animated film based on Charles Addams’ cartoon family previously the subject of a legendary TV series and two live-action films.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks cute, but nothing more than that. It had the possibility of being better, but just may not be.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Ang Lee is a talented filmmaker, but early word suggests this film isn’t that good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Early word on Ang Lee’s thriller starring Will Smith in a dual role is not good, but it looks like it could be interesting nonetheless.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I had high hopes for this film as I adore Ang Lee, but the trailer does not look that good and the early reviews are not kind, so it sounds like a misfire.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Wanting to be a more humourous version of Her doesn’t work terribly well in the traielr.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Low rent comedy from The Hangover writers doesn’t look like it gets much beyond silly.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like someone is trying to make a comedy out of Spike Jonze’s Her, which was a very good film, and only succeeding mildly.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This generic street dance film doesn’t look that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The latest attempt at recapturing the magic of 1933’s 42nd Street looks rather inane.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The plot sounds hackneyed and nothing about the trailer rises above that.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A zombie comedy might be fun, but the trailer doesnโ€™t’ do enough to sell the film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dumb looking horror comedy holds no appeal for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Lupita Nyong’o stars in another horror film, though this one looks like it wastes her talent.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The lead character is thoroughly unlikable and that doesn’t make a good sell for the film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Rather lame looking mockumentary might work better on TV than in theatres.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Mockumentaries are not my favorite genre to start with, and this one looks like a pretty weak entry.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Joon-ho Bong is one of the most interesting filmmakers working today and this one looks fascinating.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Bong’s Cannes Festival winner should finally get the South Korean writer/director some Oscar love.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not sure what to make of the trailer, but early reviews absolutely love the film.
