It’s hard to know how the weekend will go. Maleficent had a much weaker debut than expected, but the new releases this week don’t inspire confidence in success. Black and Blue feels like the latest in a series of genre bombs while Countdown doesn’t seem to have the horror heft most of its ilk do. It’s possible Maleficent stays on top, Joker returns to the top, or one of the new releases manages to surprise. If any film can, Countdown is probably it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The corrupt cop drama has been around too long and while there are elements here that could be interesting, the trailer doesn’t look it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Nothing original here.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): While the trailer looks fairly exciting, I get the impression from reviews that it does not hold up as a feature film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): An interesting concept, but the trailer doesn’t entirely sell it.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks silly..
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The premise sounds interesting, an app that tells people when they are going to die, but when it veers into the supernatural, it feels like it loses impact.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This film has been waiting in the wings for years thanks to the collapse of The Weinstein Company, but the lack of release until now suggests that it’s not likely very good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Long delayed release could be problematic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This actually looks pretty fascinating as the rivalry between Edison and Tesla was heated. Being a Weinstein Company release will probably doom it from getting any Oscar nominations.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There are elements here that could make for an interesting drama, but the trailer isn’t perfect.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It sounds like it will be a nice if unexceptional film about a large family gathering.
