With a single wide release this weekend, it won’t surprise anyone that it takes the top spot. Of course, even if it had been facing off against other films, it would likely have trounced them all as Halloween bringing Jamie Lee Curtis back is a shrewd and potentially lucrative move.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): After the original debuted to acclaim 40 years ago, sequel after sequel has attempted to reclaim the magic. While some have been sucessful, most of them have not. Now we have the origianl scream queen back and the film looks like a solid return to form.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): 40th anniversary sequel to the original looks to leave all previous sequels in the dust.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a better made slasher flick, and a reasonable reboot if you are into that kind of thing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Melissa McCarthy has a lot of potential and this could well prove that she’s more than just a funny lady.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Quirky biopic about celebrity biographer turned to crime is certainly something different.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The buzz is high about this film, though the trailer does little to goose that, and it looks likely to score a few nominations.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The premise seems a bit saccharine, but it could be better than expected.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Superlative cast in directorial debut of long-time script supervisor may not have enough to work with.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer sort of sets an interesting tone, but not really enough to intrigue one about the story.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The premise is interesting, but the trailer isn’t.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Danish police procedural about a kidnapping looks like an edge-of-the-seat thriller.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are great, but the trailer does not capture the pulse pounding excitement that they talk about.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s something unappealing about this film and this narrative.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Jonah Hill’s directorial debut about young skateboarders looks surprising interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews say it is a minor masterpiece from first time director Jonah Hill, but a disjointed trailer about young skateboarders sure does not make it seem terribly appealing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer is almost entirely forgettable and the film doesn’t seem that much better.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Robert Forster looks to be the standout in this family drama centered around his wife’s dementia.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It’s a strong cast and the early reviews are good, but it does not seem to show much new in the trailer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While seeing Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal act is always a welcome event, this film doesn’t look nearly as appealing as it should.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Paul Dano’s directorial debut looks strong on individual scenes, but what does it all add up to?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Two good actors and another debut film by an actor could make for a dramatic film. The trailers do not do the early reviews justice, but this sounds like the best of the debut films and family dramas for this week.
