The second weekend of Joker was more popular than expected, but the third weekend will be no match for the follow-up to the 2014 $241 million blockbuster. That film opened to $69 million and this film will probably open not far behind.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I never caught the first film, so I’m only mildly interested in its sequel.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The original wasn’t bad but nothing in it warranted a sequel.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I was not that fond of the original Maleficent, so I am not certain it needed a sequel. It looks beautiful, but I am not certain what else it has to say.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first film was rather fun, but it’s been so long that I’m not sure a sequel can do the original or itself justice.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Never saw the ten-year-old original, no interest in the sequel.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am incredibly fond of the first Zombieland, and worry that the sequel will be neither necessary nor as fun, but I will hold out hope.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s not a topic one would expect to have an interest in, but the production design and the trailer make for an eye-catching option.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Biographical comedy-drama looks strained.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like an entertaining if slight look at the creation of the play Cyrano de Bergerac, relying on too many easy laughs.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The word that it’s rather bizarre is a bit tantalizing, the trailer is not.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Bizarre comedy looks extremely forced.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This bizarre take on suburbia definitely looks original, but I also think it may wear out its welcome before it is over.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first film was an amusing misfire. I don’t expect more out of a follow-up.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This franchise should have been allowed to die a natural death.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have never been that fond of Kevin Smith’s films, and this one looks pretty lame.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The word is strong for this film, but a Wes Anderson-style Holocaust satire doesn’t hold much appeal.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Not sure what to make of this offbeat comedy but it’s been a huge hit at film festivals.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are all over the place but it was the audience favorite at Toronto, so it might be good or it may just fail. I am not sure which it will do.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This black-and-white drama doesn’t have much going for it other than aesthetic and performance, which could be just enough.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Longshot Oscar contender seems to be one of the most unique films of the year.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The critics love it, but I am dubious that audiences will. It may snag a nomination for Willem Dafoe or, less likely, Robert Pattinson.
