While I want to think Martin Scorsese will be the top opener this weekend, you cannot stop a heavily hyped film like The Muppets which has significantly more name recognition going for it.

Consensus

Below is a list of what we have come to a general consensus on. The number in parens represents the percentage of our contributors who agree with the statement.

Arthur Christmas: One of three family films sure to draw an audience this weekend.
Hugo: It’s a Martin Scorsese film, so what self-respecting cineaste wouldn’t give it a try.
The Muppets: Whether nostalgia props this one up or not, it’s sure to do well with audiences.
The Artist: The first major silent film contender in eight decades. Who wouldn’t want to see that?
A Dangerous Method: For film lovers, this seems to be a film most want to see. For everyone else, they aren’t even paying attention to it.
My Week with Marilyn: Marilyn Monroe’s fans are also generally film lovers, so this one should do decently well.
Rampart: While buzz is building around Woody Harrelson, the film seems to be coming from nowhere.

Aardman Animation like Pixar is a studio whose films are always interesting. They’ve had one misstep in the past (Chicken Run), but mostly they’ve had nothing but success.

Thoughts

With five slots to fill, this could be a nominee for Best Animated Feature but seasonsal films don’t usually make the Oscar cut.

Thoughts

This cute looking animated film will need some major buzz to get into the crowded Best Animated Film category.

If it weren’t for the name Martin Scorsese, I probably wouldn’t give this film a second look. I might even check it out in 3D.

Thoughts

Early reviews were on the iffy side, but more recent ones have been ecstatic.

Thoughts

Martin Scorsese must always be considered an Oscar contender…even in 3D.

Although it has the potential to be downright stupid, I have friends who are huge Muppets fans, so we’ll be there regardless of how bad it is or will be. (Solo Contender: Original Song)

Thoughts

I didn’t pay attention to the Muppets when they were in vogue. I don’t see any reason to bother now.

Thoughts

The Muppets never did great at the Oscars, but they could pull off a music nomination here.

It’s one of the must-see Oscar contenders this year. So, of course I’ll check it out as soon as I am able.

Thoughts

This black-and-white, mostly silent film could be a fluke, but it appears to be an infectious one.

Thoughts

This could be the first silent Best Picture nominee in over 80 years.

The trailer doesn’t make it look that good, though if it builds Oscar buzz again (which it once had but has since lost), I might consider watching it.

Thoughts

Intriguing premise, but nothing I’m in a rush to see.

Thoughts

David Croenenberg is always pushed for Oscars, but his film don’t have the greatest track record.

Michelle Williams’ performance is said to be amazing, which makes me want to see it. The film’s otherwise lukewarm reception does not.

Thoughts

This nostalgic take on the behind the scenes shenanigans during the making of the minor 1957 film, The Prince and the Showgirl, looks like fun.

Thoughts

Marilyn Monroe never got an Oscar nod, but this film should pick up several.

It’s got such a fine cast, and I loved the director’s last film; however, I can’t seem to muster up interest in the subject matter. (Solo Contender: Actor)

Thoughts

Intense looking thriller could be interesting.

Thoughts

Woody Harrelson is getting really good buzz for this. (Solo Contender: Actor)
