There are no new wide releases this week with fewer and fewer on the horizon. Many of the potential releases have vacated as U.S. pandemic infections are on a dramatic rise as we enter Phase 2. The light may be seen at the end of the tunnel, but the upcoming holiday box office season is shaping up to be rather bland.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like Stephen Dorff, but this film just looks aggravating and not because of him, but because the premise is so overdone.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Ultra-violent fight film doesn’t appear to offer anything new.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Watching a father and son repeatedly beat each other to a pulp does not sound like entertainment for me.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer makes this film look so tedious and ill-tempered and not at all engaging.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another step down for Mickey Rourke.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Spending time with a lot of unlikable people is something I will pass on. I really have no desire to see more than the trailer.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If it weren’t for Hugo Weaving, the narrative here would be all too familiar and all too uninteresting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Australian relationship drama with the always reliable Hugo Weaving looks interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could be an affecting movie, though the trailer felt a little too artsy and tried to cover way too many topics so ended up being somewhat confusing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I don’t think I’ve seen a trailer for a Nicolas Cage film that looks appealing in more than a decade.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): If it weren’t so noisy, this might be a good one to sleep through.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The story is cheesy, and the acting not much better, though it might be a better fight film than either Girl or Embattled.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s interesting that Hugo Weaving’s Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert co-star Guy Pearce also has a film in release this weekend, but luckily for Pearce, his film looks at least a little more interesting even if he’s playing the villain and Weaving isn’t.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Guy Pearce is always interesting to watch and this one supposedly has a surprise ending, so I’d give it a chance.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The true story sounds interesting, but a muddled trailer does little to show what the movie is actually about.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like Diane Keaton. This film doesn’t look like something that’s worthy of her talents.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Doesn’t look like much but Diane Keaton and Jeremy Irons are overdue for something good, so here’s hoping.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am sure several couples will fall in love by the end of this movie after multiple tribulations, but it looks forced and a waste of a good cast.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Riz Ahmed looks terrific in this film and early reviews have been solid, so I’m interested to see how this turns out.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Gotham Awards nominee Riz Ahmed has a shot at an Oscar nom as the drummer losing his hearing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The story of a drummer losing his hearing could be good and is said to boast an award-worthy performance by Riz Ahmed.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): When your trailer can’t be easily recalled a week later, then there might be a problem.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Jackie Chan fans may be thrilled. I’m not.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): In a week of many action films, this might be the dumbest looking without much humor or good effects to make it palatable.
