With the stellar debut of Aladdin, there are only two challengers who could top it and both have a distinct possibility to do so. Rocketman will be going after the same crowds that made Bohemian Rhapsody a success and early word is that most of the problems of Bohemian are missing from Rocketman, which will likely benefit that film. However, it should be known that Bohemian made only $51 million in its opening weekend in early November last year. The predecessor for Godzilla: King of Monsters, titled simply Godzilla, pulled in over $93 million at the box office five years ago (inflation-adjusted to $100 million). While five years is a long time to go without an entry in the series, the prior Godzilla film in 1998 made $44 million ($84 million adjusted for inflation) in its opening weekend. Clearly, there’s a love for Gojira (the original Japanese monster) that should easily outpace Elton John’s popularity. King of Monsters could easily top $100 million thanks to featuring three of Godzilla’s most fearsome competitors, Rodan, Ghidorah, and Mothra.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s something terribly fun about giant monster movies. For me, it’s the rampant destruction, a major component of why I enjoy disaster movies so much.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks as goofy as other recent Godzilla films, but should make loads of money anyway.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I found the trailer too murky to really get into it, but I imagine it will be a commercial success.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I love and respect Octavia Spencer and her involvement could elevate a rather cheap concept.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like a minor horror film despite the presence of Oscar winner Octavia Spencer.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I adore Octavia Spencer and she looks amazing in the film, but Iโ€™m just not certain that it will be as good a film as she is.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m reticent to watch this thanks to my frustration with “Bohemian Rhapsody.” That said, Taron Egerton’s an appealing lead and the film definitely looks fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly anticipated musical based on the early life of Elton John should be a box-office sensation.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It will inevitably be compared to “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but it could be a better film and boasts a strong performance by Taron Egerton as Elton John.
