The busiest weekend of the late-pandemic box office yet finds four films releasing wide this weekend. Finding You seems like the kind of film that never quite matches studio expectations. Profile doesn’t have the kind of premise that plays well to broad audiences. Spiral will test whether the horror box office numbers are ready to rebound as this is one of the genres that’s most struggled during the pandemic, but it’s also the only film releasing this weekend that seems like a chart-topping winner. Those Who Wish Me Dead is likely to compete for second with Angelina Jolie in peril, which might just bring a few people to the box office.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Looks like a serviceable, if commonplace young adult romantce film.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Well cast romantic charmer might be better suited to TV viewing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): One can tell from the trailer that these two incompatible people will eventually fall in love and find their true passions. Since we know that, why see the movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A concept that seems a touch to gimmicky, but which also looks to be potentially compelling.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): 3-year-old cautionary tale about ISIS recruitment looks like a hard sell.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): While parts of the trailer about a journalist infiltrating an Islamic state propaganda recruitment station look intriguing, more of it feels overblown and uninteresting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Early comments on this film are terrific, a return to form for a series that got pretty schlocky at the end.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks better than the typical Saw film, but it’s still a Saw film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have never seen any of the Saw films, so this one does not appeal either.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Angelina Jolie is back in a film that looks interesting, but also potentially awful.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Child in jeopardy drama with focus on his protector looks a bit skewered.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Angelina Jolie and the fire effects might make this thriller worthwhile, but I am dubious that it will be that good a movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Looks to be a ramshackle horror feature.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another low-grade horror film not worth bothering about.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The few early reviews seem to like it, but the trailer is dull and lacks any of the suspense or horror that the film purports to have.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Outside of a solid lead, this film looks like forgettable British claptrap.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): It’s nice to see Ciaran Hinds in a rare lead role but he doesn’t seem to have much to sink his teeth into.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Ciaran Hinds can be a good actor and the scenery of northern France looks lovely, but nothing in the trailer adds any excitement or humor, so I am not sure what the movie is about or why I should see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A decent and an acerbic comedic feel make for a film that looks somewhat good, but not great.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Odd Danish thriller appears to meander unsuccessfully between action and comedy.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I gather that this is trying to be a thriller/comedy but the trailer mostly lacks both, with a bit of comedy and very little of the thriller.
