A trio of unlikely hits opens this weekend, the third likely victory for Avengers: Endgame. Among these, Detective Pikachu has the best chance of topping the list thanks to the popularity of the Pokémon universe of games and movies. The Hustle just hasn’t had enough advertising done on its behalf and Poms seems like a misfire waiting to happen.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I would like to want to see this, but the trailers haven’t been that funny.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Deadly dull looking remake of a remake of a really bad movie holds no interest for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I was not that fond of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and this remake looks like it will be a step down from that.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Little Pikachu is cute as hell and Ryan Reynolds being a voice actor is a tantalizing proposition, but the film’s premise seems a bit flimsy and the trailers have been unimpressive.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): It’s gotten good advance notices, so why should I doubt what I’m hearing?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could prove cute, but early reviews make it sound not terribly good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Diane Keaton needs to find better material than this.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Bottom of the barrel nonsense about old ladies acting as if they’re the first to discover they can still move their limbs.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am sure this will prove watchcable due to its strong cast, but I doubt it will be much more than that.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It’s a premise that we’ve seen countless times and this does not look to be better or more necessary than any of those.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Two-year-old French film with terrible reviews seems as if it should have stayed buried.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The story of a man trying to find his kidnapped child should be riveting, but this looks like it goes more for gory shots than any personal depth.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have no interest in seeing anything Mel Gibson ever does again, I don’t care who else is involved.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Compelling storyline in controversial film its star (Mel Gibson) tried to have stopped from release looks like one I’d like to see.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The book is supposed to be spectacular, but the trailer does not come across as interesting, which is a pity.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer makes the film look rather cheap and the narrative seems to fly in the face of everything Tolkien ever said about himself.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): It’s difficult to tell from the trailers whether this is going to be something special or just a standard modern biopic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The film and the author it purports to detail, should prove fertile ground, but the trailer feels more contrived than deep.
