With three new wide releases, it almost feels like things are back to normal. However, we’re still in the depressed pandemic box office with all but family films struggling to find their footing. This weekend, we have another film that’s going to take on Tom & Jerry for the top spot at the box office and if anyone can do it, it’s Disney. The big question is how they release it to Disney Plus and whether that deflates its potential.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This film targets a seldom-targeted demo, which is nice to see, though I’ve never been a fan of sports-oriented movies.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): It looks like a decent coming-of-age film but the hand-held camera dominating the trailer made me dizzy.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have seen the preview several times and I have little interest in seeing this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): With an interesting concept, a lot of films could be good, but there’s also the possibility that any mass audience-targeted effort could be worthless and I’m leaning that way on this one.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Strong cast in annoyingly static sci-fi film in which Daisy Ridley is apparently the last woman on Earth.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The effect of the noise emanating from males in the trailer is intriguing, but the trailer still did not do a great job of selling the film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As more trailers released, this film looked less and less interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Stylish looking animated feature from Disney about an ancient civilization looks interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer makes it feel like a cross between Mulan and Star Wars, which might not be a good thing, but never count Disney out for making an enjoyable animated film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Pedro Almodovar and Tilda Swinton in a short film? Yes, please.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Cocteau’s oft-filmed short play, this time done by Almodovar sans the central telephone scene looks and sounds bizarre.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I read that Tilda Swinton gives a tour de force performance of a monologue in the film, yet the trailer uses not a spoken word in it. Annoying, yet I am still intrigued.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Sigourney Weaver is the only reason I’m even remotely interested in this.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Appears to be Sigourney Weaver’s best work in decades in a Canadian film set among New York’s literati in the 1990s.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It feels a bit like The Devil Wears Prada set in the literary world, but could be worth seeing for the two lead performances.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While it seems like a premise that’s been overdone, the film still looks somewhat fun.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Black comedy about young people and gangster priests in modern Ireland is certainly something different.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There is a lot of humor in the trailer, and a bit too much gunfighting even if it is humorous as well. It could prove fun, just not sure yet.
