Against the second weekend of Captain Marvel, none of the weekend’s new releases have a chance of overtaking her. Of these three, two of them stand a chance of being the second-ranked film and the top new release. Wonder Park has the animation thing going for it, a genre that is family friendly and tends to draw audiences to the theater even if the films aren’t very good. That said, the dying teen romance Five Feet Apart could generate a large amount of business from the young adult crowd as the film, based on a novel, could prove the exception to the rule of recent similar openings. It will be hard fought, but in the end, I suspect Five Feet Apart will top the other two with Captive State struggling to break into the top 5 for the weekend.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s a lot of promise to the trailer and while I’m not completely sold on watching it, I think it could be the most compelling film to release this weekend.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The trailer is all over the place, making it look like a failed attempt at something grander.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This actually looks like it could be an interesting alien invasion movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I don’t understand how films about dying teens are so popular with teens. This looks particularly onerous.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Dying teen drama appears to be over-reaching for an audience that may not come.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There have been many dying teens falling in love films, but this looks to be a weaker entry.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The initial concept was fascinating, but everything I’ve seen out of it since then, including the trailers, have made it look maddeningly bad.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Noisy cartoon movie aimed at pre-schoolers holds no interest for me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This could either be a lot of fun, or a bit of a mess. I’m not sure yet.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A strong cast could help bolster the film’s quality, though the early release doesn’t give me a lot of hope.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Intriguing looking post-WWII thriller with a delayed opening from last year could be a good one.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It has a good cast and might be an interesting film, but the early reviews are not kind and make it sound like a misfire.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m not sure this film is one I would enjoy, but it could be.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Epic Chinese drama was a film festival sensation last year, but failed to win most prizes it was nominated for.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are outstanding, but the preview seems both violent and ponderous which is not a good match for me.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While not as cheap looking as some films, this one doesn’t look like it has a lot going for it in the quality department.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sci-fi thriller looks derivative of similar films of the 1970s which is not a bad thing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Nothing in this trailer about a man trying to save his children using science and animals makes much of a case for the film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be an endearing film about redemption through animal companionship, but the trailer also doesn’t make the film look that enticing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Visually impressive Sundance hit could be a contender at this year’s Spirit Awards.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The story of a prisoner and the horse he trains seems a bit rote, but there were glimmers in the trailer that it might rise above the usual.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As hamfisted as the trailer was, Nancy Drew was my favorite of the Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew books, so I’m curious how they’ll update it to the modern era.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Is Nancy Drew still relevant?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This updated take on the teen detective felt like it was trying too hard.

Thomas LaTourette (TL): I wanted to like this film by Idris Elba, but the trailer does not make it look that interesting or different.
