After a disappointing opening for Lightyear, both of this week’s new releases have a shot at topping the charts with Elvis having a slight edge over The Black Phone. The former tackles the life story of a beloved musical icon. The latter is a horror film. In a sea of disappointing box office returns for horror films, it’s possible it could falter out of the gate. Then again, it looks to be more inventive than a lot of recent disappointments, so it could do well.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept is somewhat unique and it could be an interesting thriller.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Horror film from a novel by Stephen King’s son looks like one of the better ones.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Horror films are not my thing, but this one looks more intriguing and promising than most.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m not a fan of Elvis’ music; however, Baz Luhrmann is usually interesting to watch.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Heavily promoted biopic could turn out to be either a big hit or a big bust.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Baz Luhrmann seems like the perfect director of an Elvis Presley biopic, but the trailers feel a bit tame.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): While I love the filmmaker’s Berberian Sound Studio, this film looks a bit too odd to be interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Culinary comedy doesn’t look particularly appetizing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have no idea what it is about, but it just looks unpleasant.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer isn’t as engaging as I would like and it all looks a bit too minor.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Whimsical expansion of an animated short film could be fun it you’re in the mood for it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not totally sure what to make of the trailer, but it looks sweet and the reviewers love it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There isn’t much to see in a western that looks so static.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Could be an interesting western with a strong cast.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): No one looks at all like anyone I want to spend time with, so this unpleasant film can be seen by someone else.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This Ukraianian war drama about a gymnast competing for Switzerland may have relevance, but it doesn’t look very appealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Set in the Ukraine of 2013-2014, this political sports film provides perspective on the country’s recent past.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This has the makings of a good film, but the bloodless trailer does not make the case for it being a must see film.
