Disney’s live-action remakes have been relatively successful, but the ones that have met with lukewarm critical response have done less than stellar business at the box office. The Lion King, in spite of its massive marketing push and July berth, has received relatively minor support from critics, with most reviews on the negative side. The film will still open incredibly well; however, I doubt it will be a record-shattering weekend and it certain won’t result in a result as potent as the original film’s 1996 take, at least when adjusted for inflation ($312.8 million original and $672.4 adjusted for inflation).

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): To date, I’ve managed to see one of the live-action adaptations of Disney’s live-action catalogue. As much as I would love to re-experience the Circle of Life scene, the early reviews aren’t good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I had no intention of seeing this anyway, but with the devastating critical notices already out there, I have even less desire to see it if that’s possible.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailers do look beautifully done, but the reviews are definitely mixed. I am not sure what to expect from it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have a modest interest in the subject matter, but the trailer isn’t the most enticing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Topical French film about the sudden closure of a factory should be worth a look.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be an important film about workers standing up for their rights, but the trailer does not involve one the way it should.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): As harrowing as the experience might be, the trailer does suggest an important work.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Heartbreaking Irish film about sudden homelessness looks like it could be a sleeper hit.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not certain if the film will grip me, but the trailer does a reasonably effective job at getting across the desperation of a family who has lost their house but do not want the kids to know how dire it is.
