While there are two features releasing this weekend, only one of them has box office potential and that’s the sequel Minions: The Rise of Gru. The Despicable Me franchise has proven very popular, especially thanks to its pint-sized yellow hench-creatures. None of the top four entries this weekend hitting $31 million, Minions is very likely to top the charge and could do so approaching a $100 million tally, which is what the first Minions film did even if it’s well above the highwater mark for the Despicable Me films.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The Despicable Me films are enjoyable, but the Minions film was dull and witless. I expect nothing much from its sequel.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sequel to 7-year-old animated feature looks okay at best.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I’m sure it will have some laughs, but the series seems weaker as it goes along.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The story doesn’t seem that intriguing, though I give it points for trying for color-blind casting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Modern feminist comedy set in 1800s seems to be grossly anachronistic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It should be enjoyable, but looks like a cut rate Jane Austen.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This horror film could have potential, but the trailer doesn’t embrace that.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Swedish film set in Costa Rica looks pretty but that’s about it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does not do enough to excite me, but the few reviews make it sound like a most intriguing movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A meandering trailer that never gets to the point isn’t something worth seeing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Delayed release of a watered-down version of a British novel doesn’t bode well for its success.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It is a good cast, but the story just does not seem that interesting or original.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If it weren’t for a certain actor in the film, I think I might have enjoyed this.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Off-beat thriller looks a bit one-note.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a typical cyber-thriller and just not that exciting. Mel Gibson still seems to be making a lot of movies.
