After several weeks of meager offerings, we get no less than four wide releases, with one of them clearly the frontrunner for topping the box office chart. The Lego Movie 2 is the follow-up to the incredibly popular The Lego Movie, which opened five years ago to the tune of $69 million. It went on to make $257 million. It has since gained in popularity and should have no problem pulling in more than that topping all other releases.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Liam Neeson’s modern output has seldom looked compelling. This is no different.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another Liam Neeson revenge thriller, probably no better, no worse than the others.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not really into the Liam Neeson revenge movies, but this one looks like it could be more fun than most.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first movie was a great find, but I’m not so sure that the second time will be a charm.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I liked the first part, no reason to think I won’t like the second.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The Lego movies are fun but not what the Academy prefers. So look for a big box office success without an Oscar nomination.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The concept isn’t new and the movie doesn’t look particularly fresh, but it’s not part of any of the current horror franchises, so it might not be too bad.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): This week’s horror film doesn’t appear to have anything to distinguish itself from the run of the mill.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Nothing about the trailer makes me want to see this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Taraji P. Henson is a great reason to see any movie, though this one doesn’t look nearly as funny as it wants to be.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another unappealing comedy that looks excruciating.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks to be a fun twist to the original movie and could prove to be quite fun.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Asghar Farhadi’s latest doesn’t look terribly far removed from his prior films and it certainly doesn’t look like something that might be worth catching.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Well-reviewed Spanish film from Iran’s Asghar Farhadi looks interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I admire the director, but the film does not look like one of his more interesting pieces.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Humorless trailer for a film that looks like an indie comedy that couldn’t get picked up by a solid indie studio.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unusual romantic comedy looks highly engaging.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The characters do not look that interesting and watching them fall in love does not appeal.
