It’s Valentine’s Day weekend and although the “holiday” falls mid-week, the romantic film usually tops the weekend. This time, we have two entries. One is far more heavily advertised than the other. In the end, the tween-centric Beautiful Creatures should outperform the more adult-oriented Safe Haven, both of whom will have to fight off the male-dominated A Good Day to Die Hard leaving families trying to decide if they really want to waste their time with Escape from Planet Earth.

Individual Commentaries

Wesley Lovell: The only film in wide release that even looks remotely interesting is Beautiful Creatures. Of the new limited releases, both look like they’re worth checking out.
Peter J. Patrick: Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Bruce Willis gives us another day to die hard – plus new works from Abbas Kiarostami, Lasse Hallstrom and Richard LaGravanese plus an Oscar-nominated foreign film could signal an end to more than a month’s worth of drivel being hoisted on the movie-going public.
Tripp Burton: Another weak week for movies, so catch up on those Oscar nominees before the awards get here!
