Looking at the Weekend: Feb. 14, 2020

Four films will attempt to win the weekend in the wake of the minor debut that was Birds of Prey. Fantasy Island and Sonic the Hedgehog have the most potential, though being Valentine’s weekend, The Photograph could pull in enough on Friday to top the others. Maybe, but doubtful. Sonic probably has a better shot because it will appeal to kids, but the film looks like a dud, which may be reflected in a decent Friday and a plummeting Saturday and Sunday. Fantasy Island promises to have a consistent weekend for a horror film with a strong open and a quick fade away.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A comedy adaptation of a foreign disaster film does not sound to enticing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): How downhill can February movies go?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have not seen Force Majeure, the film this is based on, but this looks bad and I have only heard good things about the original. I will plan to see it instead.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m interested to see how this one ultimately turns out.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like another pointless reimagining of an old TV show.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I never watched the original TV show, so have nothing to base this on. The trailer starts out promising, but looks like it falls into standard horror fare.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be a wonderful little romantic comedy, but it also looks a bit gimmicky.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A Valentine’s Day movie that will be out of theatres by President’s Day.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer veers between two different styles and never decides on one. It looks reasonable, but not amazing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks utterly terrible.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Sappy comedy with character makeup that looks like it was left over from Cats.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I am not sure who this movie is intended for, but it is not for me. It looks quite bad.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): There’s not much to this that looks terribly interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Unfunny comedy looks like it should go straight to the garbage heap.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Reading the synopsis made the movie sound okay. Watching the trailer it seems pretty bad and obnoxious.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If it weren’t for the potential of the performances, I don’t think this would be more than mediocre.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): The year’s first strong drama could be a year-end awards contender for Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer does not do a great job of getting one interested in the characters, but early reviews make it sound worthwhile. The February release may keep them from getting Oscar nominations, no matter how good they are.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks too formulaic.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Has a bit of a Big Sick vibe to it – could be good but difficult to tell from the trailer.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It tries to be cute, but I think it will be more painful than funny.
