With December fairly barren for new releases, it’s rather surprising that two are slated for this weekend. All My Life is a romantic weepie and Half Brothers is about a pair of half brothers trying to trace their father’s immigration origins. Neither film looks to draw a wide audience to the theater, but Half Brothers has the more general appeal and audience demographic, so if either were to win the weekend, it would be that one.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Looks like your run of the mill, insipied romantic drama with an bittersweet ending.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Romantic drama based on a true story looks too much like a made-for-TV movie.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It could be a decent love story with the cancer twist, though it has been done several times before. One has a feeling that things will work out in the end.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The trailer wasnโ€™t quite up to snuff, but there are a couple of funny moments that might make this interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Hard to tell if this is an entirely engaging comedy or a total misfire.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): There is a germ of an idea behind this movie that could make it good, but it looks like it turns into a conventional road trip movie between people who will come to like each other and it settles for easy laughs.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A lot of these wilderness dramas have been releasing lately and none of them have looked even remotely interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Tedious looking low budget independent film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I have no idea what this movie is about. Critics seem to love it, but the trailer was confusing and did not spark interest from me.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Part of this looks good, part if it looks uninspired.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Tedious looking melodrama will not make a movie star out of Rachel Brosnahan.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A young mother getting tossed into a new grim reality could make for a good movie. Unfortunately the trailer for this one left me rather cold.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Early word is good, but I’m a wee bit tired of Frances McDormand’s indie films.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Highly anticipated film about homelessness caused by the Great Recession of 2008.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A dull trailer does little to drum up excitement, but ecstatic reviews and huge Oscar buzz make me want to see this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Something we’ve seen a handful of times before and none of them have seemed that interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Looks like the kind of thing that would have gone straight to video pre-pandemic.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A good cast looks wasted in a confusing thriller. In the trailer none of the characters seem likable or believable.
