With four wide releases on Wednesday and another three on Christmas Day, the weekend is going to be a real barn-burner, at least Hollywood hopes. It’s very likely that Spider-Man: No Way Home stays at the top for a second weekend (of likely many), but the highest posting new release is likely to be The Matrix Resurrections, outdistancing both The King’s Man and Sing 2.

Our Highest Rated Films: The Tragedy of Macbeth, Parallel Mothers

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I have little interest in sports biopics, though the cast is surprisingly strong.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another inspirational sports drama albeit one with a different angle could be a decent time killer.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks to be a good sports movie with an uplifting theme, but probably not more than that.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Michael B. Jordan is an actor worth watching, but this looks like something we’ve seen far too many times before.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Under the radar inspirational family drama from Denzel Washington looks like one to see.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It will be sweet but sappy, and well acted by Michael B. Jordan.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first movie was fun, the second movie was ok. This prequel doesn’t look nearly as interesting even with the solid cast.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Fans of the franchise should love it, but it looks a bit too silly for my tastes.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are not good and this looks like an uninteresting prequel to a so-so series.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first movie was great, but the following two were terrible. I can’t imagine the story has gotten any better in the intervening decades.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): First Matrix film in nearly twenty years looks like a mixed bag.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It will not have the impact of the original film, but I am looking forward to it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The original was a wonderful time, but this second one doesn’t quite have the same spirit, but could be worth watching anyway.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I wasn’t a fan of the original and have no interest in the sequel.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The first was cute, and I imagine this will be too, though not quite as good.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Tilda Swinton’s an actor you can watch in anything. Too bad this one doesn’t look like a better fit for her talents.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Colombia’s Oscar entry looks like a snooze fest, but Tilda Swinton is always worth watching, so there’s that.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews make it sound interesting so hopefully this moody picture will be a success.

Peter J. Patrick (PP): Almodovar’s latest features an already award-winning performance by Penelope Cruz.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are good and Penelope Cruz and Pedro Almodovar make a formidable team.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m not enamored with Joel Coen’s work with his brother, but this adaptation of Shakespeare could be worth a watch.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Joel Coen’s film of the Scottish play with Denzel and Frances should be worth seeing.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Everything I have read about this makes it sound like a phenomenal production, one that should score numerous Oscar nominations.
