It’s another dull week at the August box office. For a time, August had been a dumping ground, but in recent years, it has emerged as a second-coming of the blockbuster season. This month has been decidedly less so and with the new releases available, I doubt we’ll get much bigger. As horror hasn’t had a hit in some time, Don’t Breathe may resuscitate the genre with its unique spin on the genre. Hands of Stone could play well with bot Hispanic audiences and fans of boxing. Mechanic: Resurrection is hoping to bank on Jason Statham’s new stature after high profile successes like Furious 7 and Spy. However, the original film made under $30 million in 2011, and I doubt he’s got enough of a following to justify a high debut. Thus, it seems Don’t Breathe and Hands of Stone are the most likely to top new releases and possibly the box office with Don’t Breathe having a whisper of an edge.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks like something new in terms of horror. The trailers aren’t great, but the inventiveness could be sufficient to sustain my interest.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another week, another horror movie. I’ll wait for the reviews.
Tripp Burton (TB): Looks like another ordinary horror film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A group of teens attempting to rob a blind man has it really go wrong. The early reviews are good, but I am just not that interested.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It looks fairly generic, but the cast may be worth visiting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Decent looking biographical boxing drama could go either way.
Tripp Burton (TB): There was a great 30 for 30 about this story a few years ago, so I’m not sure if we need another retelling, but it should transfer to the screen wonderfully.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a typical boxing movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I had no interest in the original and since this long-removed sequel still stars Jason Statham, my lack of interest is redoubled.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Another sequel to another film I never saw. I’ll pass.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is far from my sort of thing, but if you are a Statham fan, this should provide some thrills.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): I did not see the original, and have no desire to see this hyper-explosive movie.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m not sure what to make of this film. If it’s just a straight relationship drama, it doesn’t seem that interesting. There are some elements that could be intriguing and the cast is strong, so it could be worth the time.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Interesting looking domestic drama, but I’ll wait for the DVD.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like a really interesting film, and Joshua Marston is an interesting filmmaker. One of my more anticipated fall films.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It’s an A list cast, but the enigmatic trailer leaves me unimpressed.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks like a fairly generic family drama that in spite of the cast just doesn’t look that good.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Good cast in family comedy/drama could make it a late summer hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): A phenomenal ensemble looks like it could lift some ordinary looking material.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It’s a great cast, led by the estimable Margo Martindale, but it looks like a not terribly funny nor heartfelt family drama.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The darkly comedic film could be worth giving a few moments to, but what its end goals are beyond revenge aren’t certain.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Scandinavian-set murder mysteries don’t come around every day. I’m in.
Tripp Burton (TB): It’s always nice to see Stellan Skarsgaard get a film to himself.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The critics like it and call it a good black comedy, but the trailer seems more a father’s revenge fantasy with lots of dead bodies. The trailer didn’t really appeal nor make me want to see it.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): A trite, uninspired religious-themed sports drama. No thanks.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Overly familiar sports themed film. I’ll pass.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks dreadful.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Running for the glory of God. This Christian sports drama looks incredibly bad.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If early word weren’t so bad, I could probably find this interesting, but it doesn’t, so I don’t.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Long delayed film with a bad reputation is not something I’m looking forward to.
Tripp Burton (TB): This sounds great on paper, but a horrible response from Cannes has tarnished it badly.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This sounds like a complete misfire from director Gus Van Sant. It looks like a maudlin movie without much to redeem itself.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It might be interesting to see how Barack & Michelle Obama fell in love, but this doesn’t look like the movie I want to see of that.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Light romantic drama about the future president could be fun.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’ve been curious about this since Sundance, but I’m afraid it will be more interesting curiosity than great film
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This fictionalized account of Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date looks sweet and interesting.
