Looking at the Weekend: Aug. 21-23, 2020

With two films this past weekend not appearing on release calendars universally, The SpongeBob Movie and Unhinged (thought it was only released in Canada), it’s possible something unexpected could drop in cinemas this weekend. However, that likelihood is limited and the supposed Unhinged wide US release this coming weekend is about all anyone can expect other than the standard slate of limited releases.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Russell Crowe in a rare villain role doesn’t make this seem more palatable.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Edge-of-the-seat road rage thriller looks compelling, but could be a bit much.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like a good role for Russell Crowe, but it feels like it will descend into senseless violence.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Some inventiveness, but not enough to be compelling.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): A coven of nonsense.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This looks like a horror movie to avoid, though the old west town is a decent twist.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): If only real conservatives were this easy to convince that gay people are actual people. It’s a rather unbelievable premise.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Church lady inherits a drag bar – could be interesting.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It is not a groundbreaking fish-out-of-water tale, but it will probably prove diverting at the present. It may benefit from being released when there is little competition, especially in comedies.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Some of the interest in this film is its creative trailer that suggests a film a bit more inventiveness than a lot of modern biopics are.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Amateurish take on a subject better done in The Current War.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks to be a bit of a love story too, though I do not know that it will cover any new territory than The Current War did. But it may be one of the better choices offered for awhile.
