There are three new wide releases this weekend and Melissa McCarthy is the most likely to pull out the win. Whether The Boss can top the third weekend of Batman v. Superman remains to be seen. Before I Wake could tap into a demographic that hasn’t had a lot of support so far this year or video game fans could earn a victory for Hardcore Henry.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Of all the horror films that have been popping up the last few years, this one looks surprisingly interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Could be the commercial hit for Jacob Tremblay that Room wasn’t and propel him to the Oscar nod he should already have.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m curious to see another Jacob Tremblay performance outside of Room, but this doesn’t look up to snuff.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Nothing in the trailer makes this supernatural thriller look remotely exciting.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It doesn’t look awful, but I do have reservations.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): More foul-mouthed than Bridesmaids – too much Melissa McCarthy for me, but her fans will love it.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m quickly getting tired of the Melissa McCarthy shtick, but this should be immensely popular.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Melissa McCarthy can be a very funny woman given the right material. Unfortunately this does not look likely to be that material.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first trailer didn’t impress me, but the second got me mildly interested.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): I set out to watch all three trailers and got dizzy halfway through the first one. Not a good sign.
Tripp Burton (TB): This is an interesting premise, but it looks nauseating to me.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Doing a film from a first person perspective is an interesting idea, but it has been done before. The gimmick usually gets old fast, though the action in this film may make it move along, though it still looks hokey.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Jake Gyllenhaal has become such a fascinating actor that it should be most interesting.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Long-delayed release looks like a confused waste of good actors.
Tripp Burton (TB): Jean-Marc Vallee can be an interesting filmmaker with the right material, but this doesn’t look like it.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It looks like Jake Gyllenhaal’s committed performance is the main thing to see in this film, and the rest of the film is just not strong enough to hold up. A pity he is wasted on something not quite good enough for his talents.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m definitely intrigued whether I should be or not.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Psychological horror film could go either way – I’ll wait for it to show up on cable.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks like the more interesting horror film this week, but that isn’t saying a whole lot.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews suggest a very good thriller, though that tension is missing in the trailer. Sounds worth seeing.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It doesn’t look that interesting to me.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Internationally-cast family drama looks interesting – trailer has a Squid and the Whale touch to it.
Tripp Burton (TB): The English language debut of a very interesting director is always worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer looks super serious without that much of a story to tell. Not sure it will be worth the time.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be amusing, but I’m not that certain.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Quirky comedy could be hit or miss – Anna Kendrick, though, looks like she’s trying too hard.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m a sucker for Anna Kendrick, even if this doesn’t seem like her greatest vehicle.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick are cute in the trailer. Whether the movie can maintain the screwball comedy vibe throughout is yet to be determined, but it could be fun.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Poor Christopher Walken can’t find himself a decent role anymore.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Simultaneous theatrical and on-demand release doesn’t bode well for this family comedy’s success, but it does look interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): A great cast that looks wasted in bland material.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An intergenerational family of singers might be worth watching, though the trailer is not the most exciting. It is nice to see Christopher Walken not playing a weirdo.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m a horror enthusiast and a parody enthusiast, but this doesn’t look appealing in either direction.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Low budget horror spoof doesn’t ring my bell.
Tripp Burton (TB): Yet another bland looking, meta-horror film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A cute concept: horror movie stars getting killed off; but the trailer looks more gory than funny, and I do not think that is what they were shooting for.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The film looks like it could be compelling.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Israeli romance looks sweet, could be a minor art house hit.
Tripp Burton (TB): Some nice reviews make this seem like something that could be worth checking out down the road.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A slightly mentally disabled woman tries to find independence in this indie film. A couple of the reviews sound like it could be worth seeing, so I will hope so.
