Can The Jungle Book take another round at the top? It’s likely with this uninspiring batch of new openers. The only reason I give Ratchet & Clank the top chance of the new releases to come in high on the list is that there haven’t been a lot of animated films lately, which means there may be interest from families. Mother’s Day might bring women to the box office, but its simple antiquated concept isn’t likely a big draw. Keanu may appeal to fans of Key & Peele and those looking for a corny comedy, but I can’t see that be a big draw.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I might have been amused by the concept, but a second viewing of the trailer makes the concept feel flat.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Key & Peele‘s first big screen comedy could be amusing
Tripp Burton (TB): I like Key and Peele in their short sketches, but this looks like a flat feature-length film.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The reviews are mostly good, but the trailer looks awfully lame and not very funny.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): It doesn’t look any different from every other Garry Marshall “holiday” film, so I doubt it will be much better.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): These Garry Marshall holiday concoctions are not my cup of tea.
Tripp Burton (TB): Isn’t Garry Marshall out of holidays yet?
Thomas LaTourette (TL): Surprisingly it looks like it could be a cute movie. Perhaps it will be better than I expected.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I like animated films, but this one looks unappealing.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Fans of the videogame may be interested, I’m not.
Tripp Burton (TB): I guess this is a video game, but it doesn’t look like it transfers well.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): It is probably relatively cute, but this animated film does not look like anything new.

Wesley Lovell (WL): It could be good, but from the trailer, I’m not sure.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Any film with Juliette Binoche is worth checking out.
Tripp Burton (TB): Juliette Binoche vehicles are always worth checking out.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An enigmatic trailer makes no case for seeing this film.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m drawn by the cast and the concept, but not the trailer.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Quirky family comedy-drama could go either way.
Tripp Burton (TB): Looks like an interesting premise, with a lot of talent in front of and behind the camera, but this could also fall flat quickly.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The trailer did not do much for me, but early reviews are pretty good and the Academy has a soft spot for dysfunctional family dramas.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): Looks like a fairly routine mathematician biographical study.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Inspirational true life drama about a genius and his mentor should be worth checking out.
Tripp Burton (TB): Another flat looking biopic, this time about someone who doesn’t seem to need one.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): A prestigious British production about an unschooled Indian mathematician could either prove worthwhile or just too full of itself.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): The first American film shot in Cuba in decades doesn’t look like the kind of movie that should be granted such a beneficial title.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Historical drama about the Cuban revolution looks interesting.
Tripp Burton (TB): I’m a big Hemingway fan, but this doesn’t look to do him justice.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): An intriguing trailer about a young writer meeting his idol Hemingway in Cuba on the verge of revolution looks interesting, even if it tries too hard.

Wesley Lovell (WL): This looks quite painful.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Routine looking crime drama from a graphic novel could be hit or miss.
Tripp Burton (TB): I feel like I’ve seen this movie already many times.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): This felt like it was trying for a comic vibe, but it was seriously misfiring in the trailer. I’m not sure that good actors can save it.

Wesley Lovell (WL): I’m quite intrigued by the artistic possibilities, but without a better idea of what I’m in for, I’m a bit leery.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): At nearly 3 hours this Bulgarian coming-of-age drama looks like a tough sit.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks to be a polarizing film that we’ve waited a couple of years to finally see.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The few early reviews are good, but the trailer does nothing to spark interest in the film or to give me any idea what it is about.

Individual Commentary:

Wesley Lovell (WL): This 2015 Oscar Foreign Language Film shortlist finalist looks like a compelling gay drama.
Peter J. Patrick (PP): Irish-Cuban film about an aspiring drag queen looks impressive.
Tripp Burton (TB): This looks pretty formulaic, but could have some interesting performances.
Thomas LaTourette (TL): The second Cuban-set film of the week, this one about a young man trying out drag looks both good and heartfelt.
