Film Previews: The Super Bowl Ads

Last weekend, one of the biggest sporting events of the year took place and, as part of that event, certain things have become pop culture touchstones, the halftime show and the new movie trailers. These aren’t trailers that are typically shown in theaters, so I’m separating them out this year, but giving them a chance to breathe. Below are the ads that I was able to find that were shown during the Super Bowl along with my brief thoughts on each and a link back to my original trailer preview.

Based on the trailers presented, the “Take the Cure” trailer for A Cure for Wellness is the best. Logan and Baywatch were the next best.

Commentary:Strangely, short makes this seem a bit more creative and entertaining than the longer trailers have done so far.

A Cure for Wellness

Commentary: While some of the most interesting visual elements from the trailers are here, they aren’t all. It may still be enough to set some measure of intrigue in audiences.

A Cure for Wellness (Take the Cure)

Commentary: Now that is a creative and effective trailer.

The Fate of the Furious

Commentary: Plenty of excitement for fans of the franchise, but for others, it’s just a bit too convoluted.

Ghost in the Shell

Commentary: Mostly it’s just outtakes from the regular trailer, which isn’t very creative and certainly doesn’t seem very interesting.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Commentary: There is surprisingly little humor no display in this trailer. Since the film was so successful because of that, it’s surprising that there wasn’t more here. Thankfully, it has some original images that the prior trailer didn’t include.

John Wick: Chapter Two (Shade)

Commentary: A corny attempt to reference its Valentine’s Day weekend competition without being sufficiently interesting.

John Wick: Chapter Two (Get Some Action)

Commentary: And the cheesiness continues with another trailer that talks about Valentine’s Day. The end result is equally unexciting.

Commentary: A nicely different tone for a Super Bowl trailer and this is probably more intense and thrilling than the normal trailers.

Commentary: Trying a similar trick as in the first trailer for the film, the off-kilter version of “Aamzing Grace” just doesn’t work, especially without some new or inventive imagery.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Commentary: Johnny Cash is a popular musical motif for trailers these days. This seems like a copy of the successful Logan debut trailer and that’s not a good thing. The film looks a lot darker than prior films in the series, so it might not be able to draw the same massive audience as before.

Transformers: The Last Knight

Commentary: What are they trying to do with this film series. The futuristic setting doesn’t tell us much and this trailer tells us even less.

Transformers: The Last Knight (Extended)

Commentary: The prior trailer got a slight buff for this extended trailer, but it didn’t manage to improve upon it, but it did present a lot more effects, which should be all the fans of the series want to see.
