Review: The first thought that crossed my mind was "Ugh". Updating for a modern audiences, successful films of the past is a tricky proposition. This one seems to be heading in the same direction of another Michael Caine update, Alfie. Amazingly enough, the actor who took Caine’s role in that remake is doing this same in this film. Caine, however, is remaining in the film’s cast, but this time taking over for the late Sir Laurence Olivier. Caine is no Olivier and Jude Law is no Michael Caine. The resultant combination is disastrous.

Oscar Prospects:

The Academy so disliked the update for Alfie that even the music branch refused to recognize it despite the original song from that film being a strong contender. So, it will be no surprise when Oscar voters choose something other than Sleuth even with legendary playwright Harold Pinter penning the remake.
