Review: Sometimes I wonder if production companies care how their films are marketed. Featuring Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah and Katie Holmes excitedly swiping and grabbing at money may capture the film’s themes, but the look is rudimentary and boring.

Review: Writer Callie Khouri hit pay dirt with her outstanding screenplay for Thelma & Louise. Since then, she’s been trying to match that success. Mad Money looks like a vain attempt at it. While it will undoutedly appeal to the people who typically enjoy empowered-woman roles, this female bank robber story is missing all the wit and energy her first screenplay possessed. And the less-than-talented Holmes hamming it up with comedy matron Keaton and poor-script-choice Latifah suggests the film might be mildly entertaining but is likely to be more embarrassing.

Oscar Prospects:

Keaton is the perennial lauded Oscar contender even when she appears in the most banal crap. I don’t think Mad Money will generate the same unwarranted buzz.
