Poster Rating: D+

Review: The poster has little bearing on the film showing a hidden hand for Texas Hold ‘Em and the two stars. Too simple. It just doesn’t evoke anything but blandness.

Trailer Rating: C+; C+; B

Review: As the poker trend seems to be winding down, another film on the subject makes it to multiplexes. This one’s a romantic drama about a man obsessed with cards who can’t see his way through a successful relationship. Not initially engaging; How can a few extra scenes make a trailer pull an audience in? It can’t.; A last-ditch effort to entice audiences and this one is far more successful. It focuses more on the relationship between Eric Bana and Drew Barrymore and less on the life-analogous poker tournament. Still isn’t something I’d want to see but this third preview makes a much bigger and better effort.

Oscar Prospects:

The release date keeps getting pushed out but there’s no reason. The film may feature a popular romantic lead like Drew Barrymore, but it’s hardly a reason to position it at the onset of one of the biggest Summer movie seasons in history. The film will surely get lost in the muddle and fail to be taken seriously by the Academy.
