Poster Rating: B-

Review: I’m entirely uncertain as to the meaning of the color pink attached to the poster unless it’s exemplary of the punk era (a style of music I’m limited familiar with). The black-and-white-and-brooding of the film’s lead Sam Riley is reminiscent of James Dean and may be a terrific selling point.

Trailer Rating: B-

Review: This dramatization of the lead singer of the legendary punk band Joy Division. Filmed entirely in black-and-white, the film looks like it might be more pseudo-documentary than drama. Performances may be top-notch but it’s difficult to tell from the trailer. The one great thing to be said is that the casting is terrific comparing the on-screen bandmates to the originals.

Oscar Prospects:

I can’t see the film moving into Oscar contention unless many of the year-end powerhouses fade away. I think the one contender that could emerge is Samantha Morton whose been languishing in indie-hell for quite some time but has managed to pull of two Oscar nominations (more than can be said for another indie darling Jennifer Jason Leigh.)
