Poster Rating: C+; B-; B; C

Review: Although the film seems to be set in the present, this poster would suggest its set in the 1960s or ’70s. The brightness will certainly attract attention, but most people are going to look at the sole definition of the poster and wonder what the hell it is and likely forget shortly thereafter.

Incorporating the first poster into the new design, we’re once again treated to a quad-color variant piece that’s all the rage in art schools, but not particularly effective in studio advertising.

This third poster is the best yet. It parallels nicely with the film’s plot and does a lot better at displaying the cast of the film than other teen-targeted films like Alpha Dog. Although this poster won’t encourage people into the theater, at least it pushes past the art-school style of the previous artwork.

With such a long list of posters (and a similarly long list of release date changes), it’s clear the producers aren’t exactly sure how to market the film. This fourth poster proves that entirely, backsliding significantly and creating an utterly cramped and cluttered morass of images that isn’t likely to cause more than confusion.

Trailer Rating: B-

Review: Films about teenagers who are too smart for their own good are a dime a dozen. Many have been done well, most have not. This trailer makes the film feel like it’s going to fit into the latter category.

Oscar Prospects:

I can’t see Oscar voters clamoring to recognize the film when they ignored Rushmore.
