Poster Rating: B+

Review: This is a cool and slick poster that relies too much on the colors I find so irritating in recent poster design, but feels fresh and inventive all the same. It’s diagonally-rotated style still carries a type of symmetry that makes it pleasing to the eye while reflecting the slanted turmoil of the film’s lead characters.

Trailer Rating: B

Review: I can’t say that the trailer is incredibly good other than I like the fact that Woody Allen has gone into a dark period where comedy is stranded on the sidelines. Ever since Match Point, he’s been focusing on stories that entertain without laughter and it’s quite refreshing.

Oscar Prospects:

The Oscars haven’t been kind to Allen for a number of years. Perhaps the quality of his films had declined to a point that Match Point‘s recognition served to remind him that he can do great things, but that they just want him back on the deep, not silly trail of filmmaking. This is serious enough, but too many other films seem to be on deck for this year’s consideration for this one to make the big race. A screenwriting nom would never be out of the realm of possibility unless they are stingy now that he’s broken the record for most nominations in the writing categories.
