As the precursor awards continue unabated until Oscar night, I’m going to be providing a weekly update highlighting the films that have won and lost momentum through the precursor awards (and in some cases other outside influences).
With a handful of precursors this past week, one of them being the Directors Guild of America, there isn’t a lot to say about this week’s winners. While a few of the races may have solidified, the big one, Best Picture, still remains relatively murky.
But, before we get into this week’s winners and losers, let’s take a look at what’s coming up this week:

Thursday, Feb. 7 – Berlin Festival (Festival) (Official)

Saturday, Feb. 9 – USC Scripter (Awards) (Official)
Saturday, Feb. 9 – Sci-Tech Awards (Official)
Sunday, Feb. 10 – British Academy (Awards) (Official)
Sunday, Feb. 10 – Grammy Awards (Awards) (Official)
Sunday, Feb. 10 – Online Film & TV Association (Awards) (Official)
With nary a consensus heading into Oscar voting, it will be interesting to see what SAG voters pick since actors makeup the largest portion of the Academy’s membership. Of course SAG also has AFTRA mixed in, which means a lot of television voters. While the massive SAG-AFTRA organization dwarfs the Academy, there’s no question there’s a bit of an influence with SAG winners going on to Academy wins more often than almost any other group. Their Best Cast award tends to favor Best Picture contenders.
Wesley Lovell: My introduction is the overall one, though I am hopeful that a lot of mistakes that have been made this precursor season by various bodies can be rectified here, though Supporting Actress is certainly not going to remedy the frustration with If Beale Street Could Talk being left off where it shouldn’t.
Peter J. Patrick: I think the big questions of the evening are whether Black Panther can win anything major this year and whether the A Star Is Born slide from grace will continue.
Tripp Burton: SAG is going to make things a lot clearer for the Oscars and also muddle it up quite a bit too. This is turning out to be quite a race, and I still have a lot of questions.

Apparently missing everyone’s deadline, Mary Queen of Scots arrived this week after voting was finished.
Oscar Chances: Uncertain: While the film could still show up in Production Design and/or Costume Design, the film’s weak reception with critics and at the box office means that it’s mostly an also-ran.

With only a handful of categories, the Gotham Awards have been having a small impact on the indie cinema that becomes big contenders in Oscar season. First Reformed topped the list with three nominations while several others placed with two. The Favourite ended up with three citations, though one was a winner-only as best ensemble for stars Emma Stone, Olivia Colman, and Rachel Weisz, who were specifically excluded from the Best Actress race as a result.
Looking over the nominees, a few titles that one would have expected to see like BlacKkKlansman and Roma received only a single nominations, while several films that still aren’t on Oscar’s radar like First Reformed and Madeline’s Madeline did quite well. Whether this is instructive or not remains to be seen, but for right now, it’s an early look at what could be charging into the fall’s Oscar competition.
