The United States has AMPAS (Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences), arguably international body. The United Kingdom has BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts). France has AATC (Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma). Now, Australia will have its own awards giving, industry-based organization, AACTA (Australaian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts). The new organization has appointed Geoffrey Rush its president and will give out its own awards in January. Here’s the report from WENN. At the time of publication of this post, I was not able to find an image of the new award.

One interesting fact has been left out of this article. The AACTA organization has been around giving awards since 1958 as the Australian Film Institute. This is a restructuring of the old organization, so can’t really be considered that new, but they are sure trying to put it forward that way.

Rush Made President Of New Australian Film Academy

WENN – Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush has been appointed president of the new Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (Aacta) to “celebrate screen excellence” Down Under.

The King’s Speech star helped to launch the Academy in Sydney on Thursday and announced that the inaugural Aacta Awards would take place at the Sydney Opera House in January.

During the launch, Rush also unveiled a gold statuette, featuring a base made of polished tiger iron, which will be presented to the winners of Australia’s version of the BAFTAs next year.

The veteran actor said he was “honoured to represent our industry” and insisted it was time to celebrate “the brilliance and originality” of Aussie talent.

He added, “(Aacta will) galvanise the craft and talent this country endlessly produces.”
