The Academy has announced all of the shortlists for their awards this year, making the narrowing process of picking the nominations easier. Below are the nine category shortlists. I’ll skip the commentary on the documentary and short film categories, but let’s look at the rest.
In Best International Film, the films that would have caused an uproar by their omission made the list (Parasite and Pain and Glory). The rest are all pretty much expected with the only surprises being the exclusion of Monos, Invisibile Life, Tel Aviv on Fire, and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (directed by Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor.
On the Makeup and Hairstyling front, it’s not unexpected, but also mildly surprising that Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker didn’t make the cut and that Little Women did. The Irishman being included would be surprising, especially considering the branch’s The Hours rule (even modest special effect touch-ups to prosthetics will disqualify them).
Surprises in Original Score include the omission of Waves and The Irishman as well as Parasite. None of the listed films are that surprising and we can ignore the exclusions like Ad Astra because they were ruled ineligible.
There are expected inclusions in Original Song like songs from Frozen, Toy Story 4, and The Lion King. There are a few that weren’t expected, like the song from Parasite, and there is plenty of music from documentaries. Some notable omissions include “Beautiful Life” from Abominable, “Swan Song” from Alita: Battle Angel, and “Beautiful Ghosts” from Cats.
The last category I have something to say on is Visual Effects. There are two notable exclusions: Ad Astra and Spider-Man: Far form Home. The rest of these seem expected even though Cats is a bizarre choice based on the trailer.
