The week of Thanksgiving started out really slow, but the Friday after and Saturday say an uptick in receipts. Here’s what we have…things started off with Fox Searchlight as the only title received prior to Thursday. After that, we got two separate packages for Amazon, a soundtrack from United Artists, then two different packages from A24.

Fox Searchlight

Jojo Rabbit

Oscar Chances: Good: With the audience award at Toronto, Jojo Rabbit has become a serious Oscar contender. While the film doesn’t look like it will score many nods outside of Best Picture, it could pull in quite a few in the below-the-line creative categories.

Honey Boy

Oscar Chances: Unlikely: In spite of solid reviews, the film is perhaps a bit too unconventional for Oscar voters. I don’t expect it to do well with the Academy at all.

United Artists

Missing Link (Soundtrack)

Oscar Chances: Unlikely: Animated films rarely score nominations in the Original Score category and the era of Pixar’s dominance of the category appears to have ended as well.
Campaign-Proposed Categories

  • Original Score

A24

The Lighthouse

Oscar Chances: Unlikely: Apart from stars Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, the film’s only major chance at a nomination is for Jarin Blaschke’s cinematogrpahy. That said, Pattinson isn’t a solid bet, though Dafoe probably is.

Uncut Gems

Oscar Chances: Uncertain: There’s a lot of buzz about an Adam Sandler nomination, but I suspect the stiff competition may hinder his chances overall.

Waves

Oscar Chances: Uncertain: The film might not have done well at the Spirit Awards, but it still remains a solid potential Oscar contender, especially with so few films about the black experience in the competition and the excellent reviews will help.
