The guild most associated with the Sound Mixing category at the Oscars might have a bit of trouble replicating this year since it’s missing one of the Oscar contenders from their own list, 1917.

CINEMA AUDIO SOCIETY AWARDS

Best Sound Mixing – Live Action

Ford v Ferrari (Wesley, Peter, Tripp, Thomas)
The Irishman
Joker (RU:Wesley)
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
Rocketman (RU:Peter, RU:Tripp, RU:Thomas)

Wesley Lovell: With the likely Oscar winner (1917) not nominated here, this group has a chance to do something different. I’m leaning towards Ford v Ferrari, but would not be surprised if Joker or Once Upon a Time… won. I’m a little less sold on Rocketman mainly because it and no-chancer The Irishman weren’t nominated at the Oscars.
Peter J. Patrick: This will probably go to the most difficult to mix, so Ford v Ferrari with Rocketman a long short runner-up.
Tripp Burton: The auto racing or the musical would seem like the likeliest winners here.
Thomas LaTourette: The audio work of Ford v Ferrari greatly added to its success as a film, so I can easily see it winning here, especially without a nomination for 1917. The musical Rocketman would seem the most likely to pull an upset.

Best Sound Mixing – Animated

Abominable
Frozen II (Tripp, RU:Peter, RU:Thomas)
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (Wesley, RU:Tripp)
The Lion King
Toy Story 4 (Peter, Thomas, RU:Wesley)

Wesley Lovell: While I would normally go for the Best Animated Feature frontrunner, How to Train Your Dragon had the most complex sound mix of the bunch, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see either Frozen II or Toy Story 4 win.
Peter J. Patrick: A tough call, but probably the most popular nominee, which is Toy Story 4.
Tripp Burton: I have no idea how this will go.
Thomas LaTourette: I will give the edge to Toy Story over Frozen, but could see it going to either. This is one place that Lion King could win, but I could see them sticking with a more traditional animated film.

Best Sound Mixing – Documentary

Apollo 11 (Peter, Tripp, Thomas)
Echo in the Canyon (RU:Wesley, RU:Peter)
Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound (Wesley, RU:Tripp, RU:Thomas)
Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool
Woodstock: 3 Days That Changed Everything

Wesley Lovell: I got it wrong at the Motion Picture Sound Editors, but I’ll go out on a limb again to pick Making Waves as the winner because it celebrates the work these people do every day. If not that, then Echo in the Canyon, which won at MPSE could win again here, but Apollo 11 is also possible and I won’t rule out any of the others, either.
Peter J. Patrick: Getting the sound right on the found footage for Apollo 11 was probably the most difficult, so that’s where they’re likely to go.
Tripp Burton: If they don’t go for the stunning technical work of Apollo 11, it will be because they vote for the movie about themselves.
Thomas LaTourette: Musical based documentaries often win here and four of the five nominees are that sort. That said, I wonder if Apollo 11 will sneak in to win.
