Unlike their editing peers, the Cinema Audio Society has only two awards. One for animation. One for Live Action. That alone makes them much more in tune with Oscar voting and as such, we can look to their choices as something of a litmus test. These are given out Saturday evening. Here are our predictions and commentary.

CINEMA AUDIO SOCIETY AWARDS

Best Sound Mixing – Live Action

Captain Phillips (Peter, RU:Wesley, RU:Tripp)
Gravity (Wesley, Tripp, RU:Peter)
Inside Llewyn Davis
Iron Man 3
Lone Survivor

Wesley Lovell: There’s been some discussion that Captain Phillips is emerging as a real threat in these sound categories. Much of that is due to its association with frequent sound nominee Paul Greengrass. However, Gravity has a lot of supporters and for the longest time the sound and visual effects awards were so tightly tied to one another that it took a modern shift in focus in the visual effects arena to break them apart. Still, I have to think sci-fi has a much better opportunity than real life.
Peter J. Patrick: Just to shake things up a bit let’s throw a bone to Captain Phillips over Gravity.
Tripp Burton: Once again, I’m not betting against Gravity. If it loses, though, Captain Phillips is the film proving to be its competition in these technical guilds.

Best Sound Mixing – Animated

The Croods
Despicable Me 2
Frozen (Wesley, Peter, Tripp)
Monsters University (RU:Wesley, RU:Peter, RU:Tripp)
Walking with Dinosaurs
Wesley Lovell: It’s the only musical in the bunch and sound designers love musicals, especially ones that have to blend songs, underscore, dialogue and sound effects. Frozen should have little difficulty winning.
Peter J. Patrick: Frozen should have no trouble winning this one.
Tripp Burton: Like Gravity, Frozen is picking up all these prizes and it shouldn’t lose here either.
