We’re almost at the end. The Costume Designers Guild is the final guild to announce their winners. It’s the penultimate prize of the season and probably will only give us clues to one final category. Here are our thoughts on the CDG.

COSTUME DESIGNERS GUILD (CDG) AWARDS

Best Period Costume Design

Anna Karenina (Wesley / Peter / Tripp)
Argo
Les Misรฉrables (RU:Wesley / RU:Peter / RU:Tripp)
Lincoln
Moonrise Kingdom

Wesley Lovell: The chances of anything other than Anna Karenina taking this prize are remote, yet Les Misรฉrables seems like a viable runner-up. Argo, a shock to be nominated in the first place, has no chance, and Moonrise Kingdom isn’t really the type of period drama this group likes to recognize. Lincoln could come from behind, but it would be entirely based on Sally Field’s petticoats and little else of the film as much of it was understated period work.

Best Fantasy Costume Design

Cloud Atlas (Peter)
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (RU:Tripp)
The Hunger Games
Mirror, Mirror (Wesley / Tripp / RU:Peter)
Snow White and the Huntsman (RU:Wesley)

Wesley Lovell: It’s a rare treat for this category when there are two Oscar nominees on the list. It also makes for a tougher call. However, Eiko Ishioka’s passing this year may be just the boost to get her this prize, but the other Snow White film could just as easily win.

Best Contemporary Costume Design

Beasts of the Southern Wild
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Wesley / Peter)
Silver Linings Playbook (RU:Tripp)
Skyfall (RU:Wesley / RU:Peter / Tripp)
Zero Dark Thirty

Wesley Lovell: This category is one of the more interesting ones around because it’s not so easy to figure out which contemporary designs will win the day. However, the flowy, gauzy designs of Marigold seem more exotic and more varied than the designs in the other films, but Skyfall is winning a lot of style points this year and could carry through with the win. Of course, any one of these films winning wouldn’t surprise me.
